Morelli Ratner Law Firm & Cates Law Firm: Aaron Rents, Inc. Found Liable In Landmark Sexual Harassment Case
East St. Louis, IL (June 9, 2011) – In what may be the largest award in U.S. history involving a sexual harassment case, a District Court jury for the Southern District of Illinois (Docket No. 3:08-CV-00683-MJR) has awarded $13.5 million in compensatory damages and $80 million in punitive damages against Aaron Rents, Inc. for claims arising out of allegations of sexual harassment that occurred at its store in Fairview Heights, Illinois. An additional $1.5 million was awarded in further compensatory damages amounting to a total award of $95 million . Aaron Rents, Inc. is the industry leader in leasing furniture, appliances and electronics to consumers throughout the United States and Canada.
The Plaintiff, Ashley Alford, was an employee of Aaron Rents, Inc. from 2005-2006 and made claims that the store manager was inappropriately touching her, which eventually ended in a sexual assault.
