Who is At Risk?
Asbestos related diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma can affect anyone who has been exposed to asbestos.  It is more likely that someone developing mesothelioma or another asbestos related illness will be someone who worked in a field where asbestos containing compounds were present or where asbestos was used.  Due the wide-spread use and prevalence of asbestos in numerous industries and manufacturing processes, the most commonly at-risk individuals for developing an asbestos related disease such as mesothelioma are as follows, in no particular order:
Aircraft Mechanic Longshoremen
Appliance Installer Machinists
Asbestos Plant Worker Mechanic
Auto Manufacturer Millwrights
Blacksmith Oil Refinery Workers
Boilermaker Painters
Carpenter Paper Mill Workers
Cement Plant Workers Pipefitter
Chemical Plant Workers Plasterers
Construction Worker / Brick Layer Plumbers
Demolition / Wrecking Crew Power Plant Workers
Dry-wall tapers Roofers / Slaters
Electricians Sailors
Firefighters Sheet Metal Worker
Foundry Workers Shipyard Worker
Furnace Workers Smelters / Pourers
Home repair / remodeler Steel Worker
HVAC Mechanics Stone Masons
Industrial Workers Teachers
Locomotive Engineers Welders

The above list is not to be seen as all-inclusive.  There are numerous other professions which could have resulted in exposure to asbestos and lead to the development of an asbestos related illness.  If you performed one or more of these jobs, you could be at risk for an asbestos related illness.

But those at risk for mesothelioma or other asbestos related diseases are not just the workers who worked with asbestos or asbestos containing products.  Research has shown that family members of those workers may also be at risk to mesothelioma and other asbestos related illnesses.

Known as “take home exposure,” many workers who worked around asbestos brought home asbestos fibers on their work-clothes.  Once home, these fibers would become airborne which could lead to the exposure of those in the worker’s family and leave them susceptible to developing mesothelioma or other asbestos related diseases.  This often explains why someone will develop mesothelioma, but have no history of working in an industry which used asbestos containing products.

A third way in which someone may be exposed is through simply working, or going to school, in a building which contains asbestos that is not contained.  Due to the particulate nature of asbestos fibers, if they are not properly sealed, they will become airborne.  Many older buildings were not properly sealed and as a result, individuals who were employed there, or attended school there, were exposed to asbestos even though their job had nothing to do with the manufacture of asbestos related products.

It is important to understand that simply because you may have been employed in an “at-risk” job for exposure to asbestos, or an immediately family was, it does not mean that you will develop mesothelioma or an asbestos related illness.  It simply enhances the risk.  Similarly, most cases of mesothelioma and other illnesses can be traced back to prolonged exposure to asbestos, though there have been many cases where someone was only exposed very briefly and developed mesothelioma or other asbestos related diseases.  Due to the usual long lag time between exposure and diagnoses, often these people don’t know how they were exposed to asbestos.

In cases such as these, your lawyer will be an invaluable resource.  Many mesothelioma lawyers have spent decades amassing information which allows them to determine which employers and manufacturers, and which buildings have been built with asbestos.  They will be able to assist you in determining all the possible ways you were exposed.

Our attorneys and co-counsel are standing by to assist you with determining the source of your asbestos exposure, and with any other questions you may have.  These attorneys have devoted decades to learning the specifics about which companies used asbestos in their products and buildings, and will be able to help you determine who is responsible for your mesothelioma diagnosis, or other asbestos related disease.  Call us today for a free consultation about your rights.
